The Need for an Independent Critical Approach Dedicated to Fátima
Public knowledge about Fátima remains at an amateur stage, dominated by devotional works from the 1950s to the 1980s which, although influential, lack the necessary documentary and bibliographic rigor. The predominant narrative ignores fundamental historiographical contributions and depends on outdated sources, leaving over sixty percent of the historical reality of the events unexplored. This deficiency is largely due to the absence of an independent critical approach.
It is essential to liberate the study of Fátima from any anachronistic sponsorship, predetermined narrative, or apologetic agenda that, by nature, prioritizes the repetition of narratives over the objective exposition of facts intrinsically related to the Catholic faith. Only autonomous research, free from such constraints, can carry out the rigorous, contextualized, and uncompromising examination that this historical phenomenon demands.
Our project therefore emerges to meet this pressing need. Its goal is to build the first comprehensive Critical History of Fátima, based on an extensive documentary corpus—including fundamental interrogations that remain largely unknown or untranslated—to offer, for the first time, a complete and faithful reconstruction of the Fátima events and their protagonists.
